Clothing
For the most part shorts, and a shirt or jersey will do just fine. Cool,
light colours keep heat away and as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours,
the light colours mean fewer mosquitos singing in you ears. Shorts are OK on
easy hikes, but on longer treks long slacks or pants will do, but don’t wear
tight clothes as these restrict movement and make hiking more difficult. At
night when going for dinner long slacks or pants, or Bermuda Shorts with a
shirt will mean that you are comfortable and look in keeping with Caribbean style.
If you happen to go to a restaurant in the city then shorts or jerseys will
not be accepted.
For birding, easy hikes or strolling around track shoes will be OK, for hikes
proper hiking boots should be worn. However, in the rainy season on any trail
you will be better off with hiking boots. Whatever footwear you choose, be prepared
for it to get dirty, just clean it when finished.
Swim Suits are recommended (you are in the Caribbean, go swimming!), if you get to
go to a waterfall or for a swim in the sea you will not regret packing it.
Military styled camouflage clothing is illegal in Trinidad, hence when going through
immigration do not wear camouflage styled clothing, leave it in your luggage. When
in the field having a camouflage styled field jacket, or pants is just fine, no one
will bother you then.
