Safety
Compared to some of its neighbours Trinidad and Tobago is relatively crime free.
Paria Springs has never experienced crime at any of its accommodations or on
any of its tours. However, this does not mean that crime does not exist. We
use common sense measures such as; tours do not go to crime-affected areas, tourists
are told not to flash money around and be sure that expensive items are not left lying about.
We do not mean that there is no crime; just that with some common sense you should
have no problems. We urge you to listen to your guides and always be polite to
locals so they look at you as a friend rather than a “tourist” who they should
try to get money from in any way possible.
Paria Springs does not recommend hiking without a guide. The forests are
dense and dangers such as cliffs are usually hidden. Paths look very different
when returning so getting lost is very easily achieved if one does not know the
forests very well. Another benefit of having a guide is that they can show
you the interesting and wondrous things that are not obvious to the untrained eye.
