Agriculture Research Station / Aripo Savanna
Drive to the Agricultural Research Station, an active cattle ranch where one may see many
uncommon birds, such as Merlins, Common Ground Dove, Plovers, Dowitchers, and Ruddy Turnstone.
This area also offers excellent views of the Red-breasted Black birds and Savanna Hawk.
Then head off to Wallerfield and learn about the interesting history of this area, especially
the part it played as an air force base in World War II. Enter Marsh Forest, a unique habitat,
dominated by Palm trees where you will see many butterflies and birds such as Little Hermits,
and White-bearded Manakins trying to entice a mate with a song and dance at their lek. As you
leave the forest and the Aripo Savanna opens out in front of you, your guide will point out
some of the numerous species of plants found nowhere else in Trinidad, including ground orchids
and insectivorous plants. Along with this unusual flora there is an abundance of fauna such as
the Savanna Hawk, the Common Potoo, Trogons, Forked-tailed Palm-swift, and much more.
After our walk, we'll drive to a horticulture farm to have tea or a cool drink while you watch
exotic flowers and birds. If you wish to stay here long enough into the evening you may see
several nightjars. All of the walks are easy.
